The “Too Late to Start” Excuse Now Has to Answer to an 80-Year-Old Marathoner

Mildred Baker of the Bronx joined a walking class for older adults in her late seventies, then ran her first New York City Marathon at 80 in 7:03:49.

Mildred Baker’s road to the TCS New York City Marathon started with a walking class. On Nov. 1, 2026, at age 80, the Bronx resident ran the race for the first time, one of nearly 60,000 participants that day.14

Her finish time was 7:03:49, according to the results release from New York Road Runners, the group that organizes the race.4 She covered a course that crosses all five boroughs, from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Staten Island to the finish in Central Park.45

Baker did not spend her life as a runner. She found the sport in her late seventies, which makes her a hard example to argue with for anyone who thinks the window for starting something difficult has closed.2

From a walking class to the starting line

Baker moved to New York in the 1970s for a job and worked as an executive assistant at Frank E. Campbell Home until she retired.5

“After retirement, I knew I needed to stay active, so I found the NYRR Striders walking class for older adults,” she told the Bronx Times.5

Striders is NYRR’s walking and fitness program for older adults. Baker joined in her late seventies to stay active and healthy, and NYRR says the community she found there transformed her life.23

As walking classes go, this one escalated.

In 2025 she finished her first half marathon, the United Airlines NYC Half.24 CBS Mornings, which profiled her training ahead of the marathon, reported that she has finished more than a dozen races and was among the oldest runners to complete that half marathon, at age 79.1

This year she was one of 26 runners named to the 2026 TCS NYC Marathon Team Inspire, a group chosen for their personal stories.3

A small club, even in a huge race

Finishing the New York City Marathon at 80 puts Baker in rare company. CBS reported that only a few hundred runners aged 80 or older have completed the race, and its transcript puts the number at fewer than 500 over the marathon’s 55-year history.1

What her story offers anyone starting late

  • Start with something you can do now. Baker’s first step was not a race. It was a walking class for older adults, which she sought out because she wanted to stay active after retiring.5
  • Look for a community, not just a workout. NYRR credits the community in the Striders program with transforming her life.2
  • Build in stages. She went from walking class to her first half marathon in 2025, and then to the full marathon in 2026.24
  • Treat your age as a fact, not a verdict. “If there is something you really want to do in life, you can achieve it at 80 years old,” Baker told the Bronx Times.5

She now has a marathon finish to back that up, listed at 7:03:49 in NYRR’s results release.4

Did this make your day? Give it a cheer.
